Low-E Windows
The US Green Building Council's "LEED for Homes" document specifies the use of ENERGY STAR® qualified windows as a best green design practice. Energy Star windows contain low-emissive (low-E) glass with a metallic coating, which lowers the window's ability to transfer heat. By blocking out UV rays without compromising visibility, low-E windows reduce the amount of heat that enters the home (lowering higher air-conditioning costs and energy) and also help to prevent the fading of interior materials. Depending on your region, low-E windows can reduce your energy bills by up to 24 percent. If you live in an area with especially hot summers or cold winters, replacing your old windows with low-E models rather than clear glass ones can provide a savings of $125-$400 a year for single panes and up to $100 a year for double-hung windows. As with many green-building practices, tax incentives are available to help recoup the costs of new materials. Check here to see the different credits that are available.
